The gaming community in Nigeria has always been quite big. Many of us owned Nintendo or Playstation consoles and some rare flowers even owned SEGA consoles, growing up. However, until very recently the online gaming community in Nigeria has not been anything significant, probably because of slow or unreliable internet service providers especially with the majority of multiplayer being online rather than local. But now, with better ISPs such as Smile, Swift and Spectranet, as well as easy and reliable ways for people to make online purchases with their Naira accounts, we are seeing a lot more traffic in the Nigerian online gaming community. People are accessing multiplayer options on their different gaming consoles more frequently now.
Because of the novelty of online gaming in Nigeria many people are limited to online gaming on any physical consoles they have, simply because they are unaware of any alternatives. If you play a lot of games on your PC though, and if you are into online gaming on your PC, you may have heard of an innovative gaming hub called Steam.
On the surface, Steam seems like no more than another online gaming store where, in addition to buying games, you can also play games online and download updates. But in actuality, Steam is so much more than that. If you’re an iOS user, you can think of Steam sort of like a Game Center. You can download or buy all your games from other places if you want, but Steam can read them and will sort them into a well organized library for you, as well as allow you to download updates for them. In their own words, they are “The Ultimate Online Game Platform”, which is an apt description.
By now the more conscientious consumers are probably asking, “What sets this ‘Steam’ apart from other online platforms where I can buy games and play online?” Well, there a quite a few reasons why you might want to download Steam on your PC or Mac.
For one, it is relatively easier and less stressful to buy a game on Steam, as opposed to from your regular retailers. The sale is instantaneous, and your download starts immediately. You get the game straight on to your machine, rather than having to pay for it to be delivered to you. Also, Steam makes sure to keep updates on all the games it offers available online, so you can easily keep your games up to date. The Steam website has a vast number of games, both popular and cult classics, to keep you occupied and entertained, and it makes discovering new games easy and exciting.
Suppose, however, that you have two laptops. Or, say, a desktop and a laptop. You’ve been playing a game on your Steam account on one, but now want to use the other one to continue playing. This is very possible with Steam! All you have to do is make sure Steam is installed on both systems, and copy the game file from one system to the other, and by logging into your Steam account you can automatically pick up again from where you left off, without having to start over. This also comes in handy if you want to play on a friend’s laptop, provided the laptop has Steam installed on it.
Steam also does a lot of discounts and deals on their games. Sometimes you may get much cheaper prices for games on here. You could also be the first to play a certain new release, as Steam often releases demos and promos on their platform.
